December 23, 2024 – A security guard was fatally shot after reportedly intervening to rescue a bank employee during an alleged robbery outside a commercial establishment in Clarin, Compostela, Davao de Oro, earlier this morning.
The 24-year-old guard was gunned down by two armed suspects during the brazen attack. Initial reports indicate that the guard and a bank teller had just exited the bank when the suspects emerged and announced the robbery. The security guard attempted to fight back but was shot in the chest by one of the suspects, resulting in his immediate death.
The assailants fled the scene with the guard’s shotgun and cash amounting to PHP 3.6 million. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Governor Dorothy Gonzaga has issued an appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of those responsible. “We urge anyone with knowledge of this crime to come forward and assist law enforcement in solving this case,” the governor stated.
The family of the slain guard is mourning his tragic death, as he is being hailed as a hero for his attempt to protect the bank and its employees.
Mayor Levi Ebdao’s Statement
Compostela Mayor Levi Ebdao expressed concern over the incident, describing it as a “grave occurrence.” He stated, “Hot pursuit operations and initial investigations are ongoing. We cannot disclose further details at this time to avoid compromising police operations. We urge everyone to stay vigilant.”
In response to public concerns about safety, the mayor emphasized ongoing security measures in the municipality:
- Regular checkpoints are being conducted, often multiple times daily.
- The installation of CCTV cameras at key entry and exit points is underway, funded by a PHP 2 million allocation. An additional PHP 1 million has been earmarked for further CCTV installations in next year’s budget.
