Malapatan, Sarangani—The Local Government Unit of Malapatan, led by Mayor Salway D. Sumbo, Jr., marked a significant milestone on December 16, 2024, with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and the inauguration of the 14th Balay Silangan Reformation Center in Region 12. The event took place at 2:00 PM in Barangay Poblacion and brought together local officials, stakeholders, and representatives from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

The establishment of the Balay Silangan in Malapatan completes the roster of all seven municipalities in Sarangani Province with their own reformation centers. These centers are instrumental in addressing the challenges posed by illegal drug use and its impact on communities.

DIR II Benjamin C. Recites, the Regional Director of PDEA Region 12, graced the event as the Guest of Honor and Speaker. Joining him were IAV Meynard Villaluz, the Provincial Officer of PDEA Sarangani Provincial Office, and other key officers. Their presence underscored the importance of a collaborative approach in tackling the drug problem through meaningful interventions and programs.

Balay Silangan is a flagship reformation program designed to implement a community-based, in-house rehabilitation initiative. Its comprehensive approach provides drug offenders with intervention services, counseling, and livelihood training. The ultimate goal is to guide individuals toward becoming productive, law-abiding citizens and facilitate their successful reintegration into society.

During the event, Mayor Salway D. Sumbo, Jr. expressed his gratitude to the partners and stakeholders who contributed to the realization of the center. “This is a testament to our commitment to creating a drug-free Malapatan. The Balay Silangan will serve as a beacon of hope for individuals seeking a new path and a better future,” he said.

Regional Director Recites also commended Malapatan’s leadership and determination in supporting the government’s anti-drug campaign. “The establishment of this center reflects the strong partnership between the local government and PDEA. Together, we are building safer communities,” he stated.

The Balay Silangan Reformation Center is poised to serve as a cornerstone of Sarangani Province’s efforts to combat illegal drugs and transform lives. With the completion of centers in all municipalities, the province sets an example of how a united front can foster sustainable and inclusive development.
