CLAVERIA, MISAMIS ORIENTAL – The iconic MAIS Landmark at Claveria View Deck came alive in a vibrant orange glow on the evening of November 29, 2024, as part of the Orange Your Icon Lighting Ceremony. This symbolic act launched the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW), an initiative under the global Orange the World movement advocating for the elimination of violence against women and girls.

Organized by the Department of Tourism Northern Mindanao in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Claveria, the event united leaders, advocates, and stakeholders in solidarity against gender-based violence.
Mayor Meraluna Salvaleon Abrogar led the ceremony, joined by Vice Mayor Reynante Salvaleon, members of the Sangguniang Bayan, and other key officials. Representing Congressman Yevgeny Vincente “Bambi” Emano, Mr. Bart Talha also expressed support for the advocacy.
Attendees included representatives from various sectors:
- Ms. Gabbi Perez from the private sector
- Mr. Gerum Salatan from the academe
- Ms. Shiela May Tagle from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development (MSWD) Office
- PLT Ronnie Donasco and FInsp Velarde from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), respectively
- Hon. Barangay Captain Raymund Rautraut and his council
During the event, participants demonstrated their commitment to ending violence against women by signing a Wall of Commitment, pledging their active involvement in the campaign.
The lighting of the MAIS Landmark, bathed in orange—a color symbolizing hope and a future free from violence—served as a powerful reminder of the community’s shared responsibility to combat gender-based violence.
This year’s campaign aims to amplify the call for a violence-free society through collective action, starting from this meaningful local initiative. The event not only highlighted the importance of unity but also reaffirmed Claveria’s dedication to creating a safer and more equitable environment for women and girls.
The 18-Day Campaign runs until December 12, 2024, with various activities designed to raise awareness and inspire action.
