OPOL, Misamis Oriental — Authorities are investigating how a young elementary school pupil brought a .22-caliber pistol loaded with five rounds of ammunition inside a public school campus in Barangay Barra, Opol, Misamis Oriental, following an incident reportedly linked to a dispute involving students.

The firearm was discovered inside the bag of a Grade 3 pupil during school hours at Barra Elementary School. Initial accounts identified the child as an eight-year-old boy, although another report described him as nine years old. His exact age has yet to be independently established.
Barangay Barra Kagawad Manny Bersabal confirmed that the recovered weapon was a .22-caliber pistol containing five rounds of ammunition. The incident has since been referred to the Opol Municipal Police Station for further investigation.
Alleged student dispute being examined
Initial information indicated that a confrontation between a Grade 6 pupil and a Grade 4 pupil, reportedly the younger boy’s sibling, had occurred on Friday. The disagreement was said to have been settled following a confrontation between the parties.
Investigators are looking into whether the earlier dispute may have been connected to the subsequent discovery of the firearm. However, authorities have yet to establish a definitive motive or confirm that the weapon was brought to school as part of a plan to retaliate against another student.
According to the initial accounts, some of the child’s classmates noticed the firearm inside his bag and alerted their teacher. The teacher then discovered the pistol, prompting school personnel to take action and report the incident to the authorities.
Child denies ownership of firearm
The pupil was reportedly summoned and questioned about the weapon. He denied bringing the firearm to school, claiming that it belonged to his Grade 4 sibling and that the gun had been placed inside his bag by the younger family member.
The child’s account has yet to be independently verified. Investigators are expected to establish who owned or possessed the firearm, who placed it inside the schoolbag, and how the weapon came into the children’s possession.
Police are also investigating whether the pistol was legally registered and how it was brought onto school grounds without being detected before it was discovered.
School safety and firearm access under scrutiny
The discovery of a loaded firearm inside an elementary school raises concerns about children’s access to weapons and the measures needed to prevent potentially dangerous objects from entering school premises.
While the reported student dispute is among the circumstances being examined, authorities have not established that it was the definitive reason for the firearm’s presence at the school. The investigation must also determine whether any adult or other individual may have been involved in the weapon’s possession or transfer.
As of the latest available information, the incident remains under investigation, and the minor has reportedly been placed under police custody or supervision. Police have declined to provide further details while the case is being processed.
Authorities have yet to release a complete account of the incident, including the firearm’s registered owner, the circumstances surrounding its placement inside the pupil’s bag, and whether any charges or appropriate child-protection proceedings will follow.
The child’s identity is being withheld in consideration of his age and the need to protect the privacy and rights of a minor involved in an ongoing investigation.
