PARANG, Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines — The Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM) has intercepted a vessel allegedly carrying a massive shipment of undocumented cigarettes off Bongo Island in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte, resulting in the apprehension of seven crew members and the seizure of 297 master cases of cigarettes valued at approximately ₱94.77 million.

The maritime interdiction was carried out on October 3 involving M/B BULLWINKLE, as naval forces pursued and intercepted the vessel off Bongo Island.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo M. Reyes Jr., PN, Commander of the Naval Command Western Mindanao, as part of the Command’s sustained campaign against smuggling and other illicit maritime activities in Western Mindanao.
Following the maritime pursuit, naval personnel successfully apprehended seven crew members aboard the vessel. Authorities subsequently recovered 297 master cases of cigarettes that were identified as undocumented.
The seized cigarettes were estimated to have a total value of approximately ₱94.77 million, making the operation a significant seizure in the continuing campaign to prevent the movement of illicit tobacco products through Western Mindanao’s maritime routes.
The interception underscores the importance of sustained naval surveillance and maritime security operations in the region, particularly in waters connecting island communities and coastal areas that may be exploited for the movement of contraband.
The operation also demonstrates the Philippine Navy’s role in supporting government efforts to suppress smuggling and other illegal activities at sea. Maritime patrols and interdiction operations allow authorities to detect, pursue and stop vessels suspected of transporting illicit goods before their cargo can reach its intended destination.
The apprehension of the seven crew members and the recovery of the cigarette shipment are expected to form part of the succeeding investigation into the vessel and its cargo. Authorities may determine through the investigation the circumstances surrounding the shipment and establish the appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
The NCWM said the successful interception reflects its continuing commitment to maintaining maritime security and strengthening efforts against smuggling and other illicit maritime activities within its area of responsibility.
The seized cigarettes, vessel and apprehended crew members are expected to undergo the appropriate investigative and legal procedures.
