JIMENEZ, Misamis Occidental — A 47-year-old police officer was seriously injured after a vehicle reportedly crashed into a checkpoint while police personnel were conducting an overlapping checkpoint operation along the national highway in Jimenez, Misamis Occidental, on the evening of September 21, 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. at the National Highway Intersection in Purok 5, Barangay Butuay, according to the initial police investigation.
Personnel of the Jimenez Municipal Police Station (MPS) were conducting an overlapping checkpoint in the area when a Mitsubishi Xpander reportedly approached at high speed while traveling from Aloran toward Ozamiz City.
Based on the initial account, the vehicle first struck the checkpoint signage before allegedly crashing into the police officer who was deployed as part of the checkpoint security personnel.
The impact left the officer with serious injuries. He was immediately taken to the Jimenez Medicare Community Hospital for medical treatment.
Police said the vehicle was being driven by a 60-year-old retired soldier, who was reportedly suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The driver and the Mitsubishi Xpander were brought to the Jimenez MPS for proper disposition while authorities continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Authorities have yet to establish the complete sequence of events, including the vehicle’s speed, the driver’s condition and other factors that may have contributed to the crash. Any determination of liability will depend on the results of the ongoing investigation and applicable evidence.
The incident highlights the risks faced by police personnel and other roadside workers conducting checkpoint and traffic-control operations, particularly along busy national highways at night.
Police reminded motorists to reduce their speed when approaching checkpoints, remain alert, follow traffic regulations and comply with lawful instructions from authorities.
Motorists are likewise urged never to drive while impaired by alcohol, as impaired driving can severely affect reaction time, judgment and control of a vehicle, placing both motorists and roadside personnel at risk.
