ZAMBOANGA CITY — A 62-year-old female passenger was rescued alive after falling into the sea from a Montenegro Shipping Lines vessel traveling from Zamboanga City toward Isabela City, Basilan, on September 4, 2026, with authorities and witnesses clarifying that it was a fellow passenger—not a crew member—who immediately jumped into the water to save her.
The maritime incident drew attention after a video circulated on social media showing a passenger entering the water and helping the woman after she reportedly fell overboard while the vessel was underway.
Initial accounts circulating online contained incomplete and conflicting information about how the woman was rescued. Witness accounts later clarified that Ibrahim Luna Edris, widely known online as IBZ Kenji and a resident of Processing, Isabela City, was the passenger who took the immediate and dangerous step of jumping into the sea to reach the woman.
According to accounts from passengers aboard the vessel, the woman had been seated near another passenger before she asked where the comfort room was located. She then walked toward the area.
Moments later, passengers heard shouts alerting those aboard that a woman had fallen into the sea.
Edris immediately responded by jumping into the water and making his way toward the victim. He was eventually able to reach the woman and help pull her back toward the vessel.
The woman, identified in accounts as Nurayda Penyong, was rescued alive and subsequently received medical attention.
The incident could have ended in tragedy, particularly given the dangers involved when a passenger falls overboard from a moving vessel. The quick response of Edris became a crucial part of the rescue, as he placed himself at considerable risk to assist another passenger in distress.
In a statement shared following the rescue, Edris emphasized that helping someone in immediate danger should not depend on whether a person wears a uniform or holds an official position.
“Even if we are not Coast Guard or police officers, what matters is that we help our fellow human beings whose lives are in danger. Thank You Allah.”
His actions have since drawn praise from fellow passengers and members of the public, with many describing the rescue as an example of courage and compassion during a critical situation.
