PANTUKAN, DAVAO DE ORO — A large forest and grass fire broke out in a mountainous area along the boundary of Barangay Araibo in Pantukan and Barangay Mapawa in Maragusan, Davao de Oro, late Wednesday afternoon, September 2, 2026, prompting concern over possible damage to the area’s vegetation and forest resources.
The fire was first noticed at around 5 p.m. and continued to be visible until approximately 6 p.m., according to information shared in connection with the incident. Authorities subsequently confirmed that a fire had occurred in the forested and mountainous portion of the area.
A photograph showing the blaze was shared on Facebook by Skye Abad, who said the fire had caused significant concern because of its impact on the environment. The image showed flames and smoke rising from the vegetation-covered slopes.
The fire reportedly spread through dry grass and vegetation in the area. The prevailing hot and dry conditions were believed to have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, although authorities have not established the exact cause of the fire.
Abad called for those responsible for the incident, if the fire is found to have been deliberately started, to be held accountable under the law.
“I hope that whoever responsible for this fire will answer to our mother nature and our LAW! Grabe nga damage sa atong inang kalikasan,” Abad said in her social media post.
The incident comes amid continuing concerns over vegetation fires in upland areas, where prolonged heat and dry vegetation can create conditions favorable for the rapid spread of flames. Grass and other dried vegetation can serve as fuel, allowing fires to move quickly across open slopes and potentially reach forested areas.
The affected area is situated along the Pantukan–Maragusan boundary, making the incident a concern for both communities as the fire involved mountainous and forested terrain.
Authorities have confirmed the occurrence of the fire, but further information is needed to determine the extent of the area burned, the actual cause of the blaze, and whether any forest resources or other properties were damaged.
Officials are expected to continue assessing the affected area and determining whether the fire resulted from an accident, human activity, or possible deliberate ignition.
For now, environmental concerns remain at the center of the incident, particularly because fires in forest and upland areas can damage vegetation, wildlife habitat and other natural resources beyond the immediately visible burn area.
Authorities are also expected to remind residents and visitors in upland communities to exercise extreme caution when dealing with fire, particularly during periods of elevated heat and dry vegetation, as a small ignition can quickly develop into a large-scale grass or forest fire.
