TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental — A 9-year-old boy identified as Amrel was injured after he was impaled by a sharp metal portion of a church gate in Zone 6, Barangay Santa Cruz, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, on Tuesday afternoon, August 25, 2026.
According to information shared by local residents, the incident happened when the child was in the vicinity of the church gate. The boy reportedly became impaled by a protruding piece of sharp metal from the gate, leaving him in need of immediate medical assistance.
Residents in the area immediately came to the child’s aid while personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Tagoloan responded to the scene.
Witnesses and neighbors said children had previously been reminded to avoid playing in the area because of potential hazards. The incident, however, underscores the risks posed by exposed or sharp metal structures in places frequented by children.
Responders carefully attended to Amrel before preparing him for transport to a medical facility. The sharp metal portion of the gate reportedly remained attached to the child and was transported with him to prevent further injury while he was being brought to the hospital.
The child was subsequently loaded into an MDRRMO Tagoloan ambulance and transported to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) in Cagayan de Oro City for further medical evaluation and treatment.
Neighbors also assisted emergency responders during the operation, demonstrating the importance of immediate community assistance while professional responders were on their way.
As of the latest available information, Amrel was already under medical care at NMMC. Details regarding the extent of his injuries and his medical condition were not immediately available.
The incident also highlights the need for property owners, church administrators and local authorities to regularly inspect gates, fences and other structures located in areas where children may gather or play. Exposed metal edges and other physical hazards can pose serious risks, particularly to young children.
Authorities and community leaders may also consider strengthening safety reminders and restricting access to potentially dangerous areas to help prevent similar accidents in the future.
