ZAMBOANGA CITY — A retired uniformed personnel was arrested after being caught carrying a firearm that was officially issued not to him, but to his wife, during a police checkpoint along the MCLL Highway in Barangay Culianan on Wednesday afternoon, August 19, 2026.

Personnel of Zamboanga City Police Station 4 (ZCPS-4) were conducting a routine checkpoint when they stopped the retired service member and discovered that he was in possession of a firearm.

Police investigators later determined that the weapon was a government-issued firearm assigned to the suspect’s wife, who is the authorized holder of the firearm.

Authorities said the retired uniformed personnel himself had no legal authority to carry or possess the weapon, despite his previous service in the uniformed sector and his relationship to the firearm’s authorized holder.

The discovery prompted his arrest, and he was placed under police custody while authorities prepared the appropriate charges for alleged illegal possession of a firearm.

Police emphasized that the status of a person as a former member of a uniformed service does not automatically grant that individual the authority to carry a firearm, particularly when the weapon is officially issued to another person.

Authorities likewise stressed that a government-issued firearm may only be carried and used by the duly authorized personnel to whom it was issued, subject to existing laws, regulations, and firearm policies.

The incident serves as a reminder that government-issued firearms remain subject to strict accountability and that unauthorized possession or carrying of such weapons may result in criminal liability.

Police said the case would proceed through the appropriate legal process, with investigators documenting the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm and determining the specific violations that may be filed against the retired personnel.

Authorities also reiterated their call for firearm holders to ensure that government-issued weapons remain under the custody and control of their authorized users and are not transferred, lent, or carried by individuals who have no legal authority to possess them.

The arrest came amid continued police checkpoint operations in Zamboanga City aimed at enforcing firearms regulations, maintaining public safety, and preventing the unauthorized movement of weapons.

Further details on the identity of the arrested individual, the firearm involved, and the specific charges were not immediately released by authorities.
