TANTANGAN, South Cotabato — A 67-year-old man was killed after he was stabbed during a drinking session at a wake in Purok Paghidaet, Barangay New Iloilo, Tantangan, South Cotabato, shortly after 11:21 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

The Tantangan Municipal Police Station identified the victim as Armando Calar, also known as “Molong,” a resident of Purok Magsagana, Barangay Lambayong, Tampakan, South Cotabato.
Based on the initial investigation, Calar and the suspect, identified only as alias “Lowel,” an adult resident of the area, were drinking together while attending a wake when an argument or confrontation reportedly escalated into a violent stabbing incident.
Police said Calar suddenly pulled out a bolo and attacked Lowel, stabbing him first. The suspect was reportedly able to wrest control of the bladed weapon from Calar and retaliated by stabbing him.
Calar sustained a stab wound to his abdomen. The injury proved fatal, and he was declared dead at the scene.
Lowel, who also suffered injuries during the confrontation, was immediately rushed to Dr. Arturo P. Pingoy Medical Center for medical treatment. Authorities have yet to disclose the extent of his injuries and his current condition.
The victim’s remains were brought to Victory Memorial Homes in Barangay New Iloilo, Tantangan, where they were temporarily placed while arrangements were being made for their transfer to his hometown in Tampakan.
The Tantangan Municipal Police Station continues to investigate the incident to establish the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation and determine the appropriate charges against the surviving suspect.
Authorities are also expected to gather additional statements from witnesses who were present at the wake when the stabbing occurred.
