TALAYAN, Maguindanao del Sur — A 47-year-old barangay councilor from Datu Piang was shot dead by unidentified gunmen while riding his motorcycle in Barangay Poblacion, Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur, shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

The victim was identified as Misuary Bago Mayuan, a barangay kagawad of Barangay Alunganen, Datu Piang, according to Bangsamoro police spokesperson Capt. Steffi Salanguit.

Based on the initial report of the Talayan Municipal Police Station, Mayuan was driving his black Honda CRF motorcycle when he was allegedly followed by suspects aboard a silver Suzuki Stingray.

Police said the suspects reportedly approached and fired at Mayuan when they reached a portion of Barangay Poblacion. The firearm used in the attack and its caliber have yet to be determined.

Mayuan sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body. Responding police personnel immediately brought him to Dalican District Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Initial police information indicated that no spent bullet casings were recovered at the crime scene. Investigators are continuing to examine the area and gather other evidence that could help establish how the shooting unfolded and identify those responsible.

Authorities immediately launched a hot pursuit operation following the shooting. Nearby police stations were alerted, while coordination was also made with personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines for possible dragnet and checkpoint operations along routes that may have been used by the suspects to escape.

The motive for the killing remains unknown.

Police are now working to establish whether the attack was related to Mayuan’s position as a barangay official, a personal dispute, or another possible motive. Investigators are also looking into the movements of the victim and the suspects before the shooting.

Authorities have yet to release the identities of any suspects or determine the exact number of gunmen involved.

The victim’s remains were later turned over to his relatives for the observance of Muslim burial rites.

The Talayan police investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing their pursuit of the unidentified assailants and efforts to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
