GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines — Police authorities rescued a 15-year-old male student in connection with an alleged online threat against an academic institution in General Santos City on September 22, 2026, after a cyber investigation traced a Facebook account reportedly used to send threatening messages against members of the school community.
The rescue operation was conducted at around 4:30 p.m. on September 22 at the Barangay Hall of Apopong, General Santos City, by personnel of Police Station 3 of the General Santos City Police Office (GSCPO) and the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 12 (RACU 12).
The operation was carried out with the assistance of barangay social welfare personnel and the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
According to authorities, the minor was reportedly identified as the owner of a Facebook account that had sent messages containing alleged threats of violence against students, teachers, school personnel and security guards.
The messages also reportedly contained demands involving three students, prompting serious concern within the school community and leading authorities to undertake a cyber investigation.
Cyber patrol leads police to account owner
Police said intensified cyber patrolling and digital investigative efforts enabled authorities to determine the identity and location of the person allegedly behind the account.
The subsequent operation at the Apopong Barangay Hall resulted in the minor being placed under appropriate protective intervention rather than treated as an ordinary adult suspect.
Authorities coordinated with social welfare personnel throughout the operation, taking into consideration the child’s age and welfare.
The minor was subsequently referred to Bahay Pag-asa in Barangay Sinawal, General Santos City, where he was placed under temporary custody for appropriate intervention.
A psychological evaluation was also recommended as part of the intervention process.
The authorities did not disclose further details about the identity of the school, the three students mentioned in the messages, or the specific contents of the alleged threats, in consideration of the minor’s privacy and the sensitivity of the case.
Legal assessment still underway
Police emphasized that the incident is being handled with due consideration for the minor’s rights and welfare, while the appropriate legal procedures are being observed.
Authorities said the alleged act may constitute a violation of Article 282 of the Revised Penal Code, or Grave Threats, in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, subject to proper assessment and determination by the competent authorities.
The reference to possible criminal liability does not, by itself, establish that the minor committed the alleged offense. The circumstances of the incident and the applicable legal provisions remain subject to the proper investigation and procedures required under Philippine law.
The case also highlights the challenges faced by schools and law enforcement agencies in responding to threats made through social media, where messages can rapidly create fear among students, teachers and families even before the authenticity or seriousness of a threat is fully established.
For authorities, the immediate priority in the General Santos City incident was to locate the person reportedly connected to the account, address the potential safety concern, and ensure that the minor receives the appropriate protective and social interventions while the case undergoes legal assessment.
Police urged the public to exercise caution when using social media and to immediately report credible threats or suspicious online activity to authorities rather than sharing potentially threatening material further online.
The identity of the minor was withheld in accordance with child-protection principles and the legal safeguards applicable to children in conflict with the law.
