KABACAN, Cotabato — A seemingly minor dispute over ₱100 turned violent in Kabacan, Cotabato, after a 37-year-old man allegedly stabbed his own 28-year-old nephew following a heated argument involving the victim’s mother.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 6, at Sitio Lumayong, Barangay Kayaga, according to the initial investigation of the Kabacan Municipal Police Station.
Police said the suspect allegedly approached the victim’s mother and asked for ₱100. When the woman reportedly refused to give him the money, an argument broke out between them.
The situation escalated when the victim intervened, reportedly attempting to defend his mother and stop the confrontation.
It was at this point, police said, that the suspect allegedly attacked his nephew with a bladed weapon, striking him in the chest.
The victim suffered a stab wound and was immediately brought to a hospital for medical treatment. He was later reported to be in stable condition and remains under medical care as he continues to recover from the attack.
Responding police officers, assisted by members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT), promptly apprehended the suspect following the incident.
Authorities also recovered a double-bladed knife at the scene, which police believe may have been used in the stabbing.
The suspect is now in police custody and is expected to face a complaint for frustrated homicide in connection with the attack.
The case has drawn attention because what reportedly began as a dispute over a small amount of money quickly escalated into a violent confrontation within a family, leaving the victim injured and requiring hospitalization.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the incident, including the events that led to the stabbing and the suspect’s motive beyond the reported dispute over the ₱100.
Authorities are also expected to gather additional statements from the victim, the suspect, witnesses and other individuals who may have been present during the confrontation.
The Kabacan Municipal Police Station continues to prepare the appropriate case against the suspect as investigators work to determine all relevant facts surrounding the incident.
The suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
