MAKILALA, Cotabato Province — A heartbreaking tragedy has left a community in mourning after two young daycare learners, aged four and five, drowned in a rain-filled open septic tank on Monday, July 27, in Purok 10, Barangay Concepcion, Makilala, Cotabato Province.
The victims, who were cousins and best friends, had just returned home from their daycare center when the fatal accident occurred. According to Barangay Chairperson Rey Cayare, who is also related to the children, the two were happily playing around their residential compound while still carrying their lunch boxes from school.
Initial findings by the Makilala Municipal Police Station indicate that the children accidentally slipped and fell into a newly dug septic tank that had been left open and had filled with rainwater following days of continuous rainfall in the area.
The children’s sudden disappearance prompted an immediate search by family members and nearby residents. Their lunch boxes were later spotted floating on the surface of the water inside the septic tank, raising fears that they had fallen into it.
Responders immediately dove into the water-filled pit and recovered both children from beneath the surface. They were rushed to Makilala Medical Specialist Hospital in a desperate attempt to save their lives before being transferred to Davao Doctors Hospital in Davao City for advanced medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel at both hospitals, the two young victims were later declared dead.
Barangay Chairperson Cayare expressed profound grief over the incident, describing the tragedy as doubly painful since the victims were not only members of the community but also his own grandchildren. He recalled that the children had been happily playing moments before the accident, unaware of the danger posed by the uncovered septic tank concealed by floodwater.
Authorities said one child reportedly witnessed the incident and immediately alerted the victims’ grandmother, allowing rescuers to respond without delay. However, by the time the children were pulled from the water, they had already been submerged for several minutes.
The incident has shocked residents of Barangay Concepcion and renewed concerns over the safety of construction sites and uncovered septic tanks, particularly during the rainy season when floodwaters can conceal life-threatening hazards.
Following the tragedy, local authorities urged homeowners, contractors, and owners of private facilities to ensure that septic tanks, excavations, and other dangerous structures are securely covered or fenced off to prevent similar accidents.
Officials also reminded parents and guardians to closely supervise young children, especially during the rainy season when hidden hazards become even more dangerous.
The deaths of the two young cousins have left their family devastated and the entire community grieving, as what began as an ordinary afternoon after school ended in an unimaginable tragedy that claimed two innocent lives.
