MATALAM, Cotabato – A longstanding conflict between two clans in Cotabato took a significant step toward resolution after the Bulanan and Salamat clans reached an amicable settlement through a mediation meeting facilitated by law enforcement, military, and local government officials under the peace-building initiative known as Project Reconcile.

The settlement meeting was held on June 16, 2026, at the residence of Barangay Chairman Datutin Ambil in Barangay Kilada, Matalam, Cotabato, bringing together key stakeholders committed to fostering peace and preventing the escalation of clan-related disputes in the area.

Leading the activity were PCOL Ramel B. Hojilla, Acting Provincial Director of the Cotabato Police Provincial Office, and PLTCOL Dominador L. Palgan Jr., Deputy Provincial Director for Operations. Their participation underscored the Philippine National Police’s continued efforts to address local conflicts through dialogue, mediation, and community-based peace initiatives.

The peace dialogue was also attended by Board Member Sittie Eljorie C. Antao-Balisi, Barangay Chairman Datutin Ambil, Matalam Municipal Police Station Chief PLTCOL Melvin Hugos, LTC Erwin Jhay Dumaghan, Battalion Commander of the 40th Infantry Battalion, and 1LT John Kevin Balagtas, Company Commander of Bravo Company, 72nd Infantry Battalion.

Authorities said the meeting served as a platform for both clans to openly discuss their grievances and concerns in a peaceful and constructive environment. Through mediation efforts and the active involvement of local leaders, security forces, and community stakeholders, the parties were able to reach a mutually acceptable resolution.

The breakthrough was formally sealed with the signing of a settlement agreement by representatives of both the Bulanan and Salamat clans in the presence of attending officials, symbolizing their commitment to ending hostilities and maintaining harmony within their communities.

Project Reconcile, a conflict resolution and peace-building initiative, aims to prevent violence stemming from clan feuds and other community disputes by encouraging dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among conflicting parties. The program has been instrumental in promoting lasting peace in various parts of Cotabato by providing peaceful avenues for dispute resolution.

Officials welcomed the successful settlement as a positive development for Barangay Kilada and the municipality of Matalam, emphasizing that unity and cooperation remain essential in sustaining peace and development in conflict-affected communities.

The agreement is expected to help strengthen social cohesion and reduce the risk of future tensions between the two families, while serving as an example of how collaborative efforts among government agencies, local leaders, and community members can effectively resolve disputes without resorting to violence.

Authorities expressed optimism that the reconciliation would pave the way for stronger community relations and contribute to the broader peace and security agenda in Cotabato Province.
