TALIPAO, Sulu — A voluntary firearm turnover facilitated by the 41st Infantry “Partner for Peace” Battalion has marked another step forward in the government’s efforts to build safer and more peaceful communities in the province of Sulu.

The activity, conducted on June 8, 2026, formed part of the battalion’s continuing implementation of the Gun-Free and Peace-Centered Community Program, a key initiative supporting the attainment of Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPS) in the Municipality of Talipao.

Under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Genesis R. Gabrido, Commanding Officer of the 41st Infantry Battalion, and facilitated by First Lieutenant Joebriggs P. Prado, local stakeholders and community leaders worked together to encourage the voluntary surrender of loose firearms as part of ongoing peace-building efforts.

The initiative gained strong support from Barangay Chairman Hasanal S. Warram of Lower Kamuntayan, Barangay Chairman Yashier S. Tulawie of Kabungkul, and their respective Barangay Local Government Units (BLGUs), who continue to play a crucial role in advancing peace and security programs within their communities.

As a result of the campaign, one 9mm KG9 submachine gun was voluntarily turned over to authorities.

While only a single firearm was surrendered, military officials emphasized that the turnover carries significant meaning in the broader context of peace and security efforts in the municipality. The act symbolizes growing public trust in government institutions and reflects the willingness of community members to choose cooperation, dialogue, and peace over armed conflict and violence.

Security officials noted that every firearm removed from circulation contributes to reducing potential threats to public safety and helps create a more secure environment for residents. The surrender also demonstrates the increasing commitment of local communities to support initiatives aimed at fostering stability, development, and social cohesion.

The activity underscores the importance of collaboration between the military, local government units, and community stakeholders in addressing security concerns and sustaining peace gains in conflict-affected areas.

According to the 41st Infantry Battalion, the voluntary turnover is more than just the surrender of a weapon—it represents another milestone toward establishing safer barangays, strengthening partnerships among stakeholders, and ultimately achieving the declaration of Stable Internal Peace and Security throughout Talipao.

The battalion reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with local leaders, government agencies, and residents in implementing programs that promote security, unity, and long-term peace across Sulu.

Authorities expressed optimism that continued community participation and support for peace-centered initiatives will further contribute to lasting stability and development in the province, benefiting future generations and reinforcing Sulu’s journey toward enduring peace.
