SUMISIP, Basilan — Authorities confiscated 15 illegally cut Lawaan round logs during a two-night anti-illegal logging operation in Barangay Mahatalang, Sumisip, Basilan on Saturday night, May 30, under the Provincial Government of Basilan’s “Sagip Kalikasan” campaign.

The operation was spearheaded by troops of the 32nd Infantry Battalion (32IB) led by Basilan Governor Mujiv S. Hataman, in coordination with Tuburan Mayor Durie S. Kallahal, Sumisip Vice Mayor Gulam Hataman, personnel of the Sumisip Municipal Police Station (MPS), and the Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB)-BARMM.
Authorities discovered the illegally harvested Lawaan logs at the Sampinit Complex in Barangay Mahatalang after conducting intensified monitoring and enforcement operations against illegal logging activities in the province.
According to Governor Hataman, the confiscation was the result of sustained government efforts to combat the unlawful cutting and transport of timber and to protect Basilan’s remaining forest resources from environmental destruction.
“Our forests are among Basilan’s most valuable resources. Through our Sagip Kalikasan Campaign, we will continue to intensify operations against illegal logging and ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law,” Hataman said.
The seized logs were immediately secured and placed under government custody pending inventory, documentation, and further legal proceedings.
Authorities said evidence gathered at the site indicated unauthorized cutting and transport operations within the area, prompting a deeper investigation to identify the individuals and groups behind the illegal activity.
The operation highlighted the close coordination among local government units, police forces, military personnel, and regional law enforcement agencies in strengthening environmental protection efforts in Basilan.
Officials emphasized that illegal logging remains a serious environmental concern as it contributes to deforestation, soil erosion, flooding, and the destruction of critical watersheds and wildlife habitats.
The Provincial Government reiterated its commitment to the strict implementation of environmental laws through the continuing “Sagip Kalikasan” campaign, which aims to preserve Basilan’s natural resources and prevent further exploitation of forest areas.
Authorities are now preparing the appropriate charges against those responsible for the illegal cutting and transport of the confiscated Lawaan timber.
Meanwhile, the provincial government also urged residents to cooperate with authorities by reporting illegal logging activities and supporting ongoing environmental conservation programs to help safeguard Basilan’s forests for future generations.
