A human skeleton was discovered in a remote area of Barangay Sangab in the municipality of Maco, prompting local authorities to conduct an extensive investigation to determine the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the case.

According to the Philippine National Police, personnel of the Maco Municipal Police Station immediately responded after receiving a report regarding the discovery on the afternoon of May 26, 2026.

The report came from concerned citizen Eric Cabalida, 48, a resident of Purok 3, Barangay Sangab, who stumbled upon the skeletal remains while searching for purple yam (“ube”) with his 14-year-old son in a steep ravine situated far from residential communities.

Authorities said the area where the remains were found is estimated to be around 25 kilometers away from the police station, making access difficult for responding personnel.

Under the supervision of PLTCOL Jerry T. Cabag, responding police officers, together with sanitary inspectors from the Maco Health Center, immediately proceeded to the site to conduct an initial investigation and assessment. The police also requested assistance from the forensic unit of Davao de Oro to ensure proper handling and processing of the skeletal remains.

However, authorities encountered major challenges during the operation due to rough terrain, darkness, and heavy rainfall that heightened the risk of landslides in the area. Despite the hazardous conditions, responders prioritized safety while carefully retrieving the remains from the ravine.

Upon the arrival of the forensic team, the skeletal remains were formally turned over for examination. Swab samples were also collected as part of the forensic procedures aimed at identifying the victim and uncovering possible clues surrounding the death.

As of this writing, the remains are under the custody of Maco Funeral in Barangay Anislagan, Maco. Coordination is ongoing between the Maco Health Center and other concerned offices for the proper disposition and eventual burial of the remains at the Maco Cemetery.

The Philippine National Police assured the public that standard investigative and forensic procedures are being strictly observed in coordination with relevant agencies to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the circumstances behind the incident.
