STA. CRUZ, Davao del Sur — Residents and motorists expressed concern after a group of young individuals allegedly engaged in illegal drag racing along the national highway in front of the popular “Kapelat” coffee spot in Sta. Cruz town late Sunday night, May 10, 2026.

Based on videos circulating online, the area was crowded and lively at around 10 p.m. as motorcycles reportedly raced at high speed along the highway, drawing spectators and onlookers. The incident was also captured on video by a woman locally known as the “Kapelat Girl,” whose footage has since spread on social media.

Witnesses said the racers occupied portions of the highway despite the presence of passing vehicles, creating a dangerous situation for both participants and unsuspecting motorists.

Concerned residents warned that drag racing on public roads poses a serious threat to public safety, especially along busy highways where accidents can occur without warning. Several netizens also criticized the apparent lack of crowd control and traffic enforcement during the activity.

Illegal drag racing has long been considered a major road hazard in many parts of the country, with authorities repeatedly reminding the public that such activities can lead to severe injuries and even fatalities.

As of this writing, no official statement has yet been released by the Sta. Cruz Municipal Police Station regarding the incident. Likewise, the Municipal Government of Sta. Cruz has yet to comment on the alleged illegal racing activity.

Authorities are expected to review the circulating videos to determine possible violations of traffic laws and identify those involved in the incident.
