Authorities in Isabela City seized an estimated ₱5.8 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes and arrested two male suspects during an anti-smuggling operation conducted late Wednesday night in Barangay Menzi.

According to the Isabela City Police Station, the operation stemmed from a routine mobile patrol carried out by members of the station’s Alert Team at around 10:30 p.m. on May 7, 2026.
Police said the operatives were patrolling the area in Barangay Menzi when they noticed a multicab without a license plate allegedly loading boxes of cigarettes from the lower section of a warehouse. The suspicious activity prompted authorities to approach the vehicle and conduct a verification.
Upon inspection, law enforcers discovered that the vehicle was loaded with large quantities of cigarettes believed to have been smuggled into the country. A follow-up inspection inside the warehouse led to the recovery of additional cartons and cases of cigarettes lacking the required graphic health warnings mandated under Philippine law.
Confiscated during the operation were 55 cases of Bravo Red cigarettes, 24 cases of Bravo Green cigarettes, 19 cases of Bosque cigarettes, and 18 cases of Cannon cigarettes. Authorities estimated the total market value of the seized products at approximately ₱5.8 million.
The two arrested suspects were immediately taken into police custody for documentation and the filing of appropriate charges. Their identities were not immediately disclosed pending further investigation.
The confiscated cigarettes are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and legal action.
Police said the operation highlights the continuing campaign against cigarette smuggling, which authorities say deprives the government of millions in tax revenues and poses potential health risks due to the circulation of unregulated tobacco products.
Under Philippine law, imported cigarette products are required to carry graphic health warnings and comply with customs and taxation regulations. Smuggled tobacco products often evade excise taxes and bypass regulatory checks, undermining both public health measures and legitimate businesses.
The Isabela City Police Station, under the leadership of PLTCOL Wilfredo P. Palamos Jr., reiterated its commitment to intensifying anti-smuggling operations in the city and strengthening enforcement efforts against illegal trade activities in Basilan and nearby areas.
Authorities are also investigating the possible source and distribution network linked to the seized contraband as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organized smuggling operations in the region.
