Authorities arrested six personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and one civilian during a joint anti-smuggling operation conducted before dawn on April 17, 2026, inside a Coast Guard sub-station in Naawan, Misamis Oriental.

Operatives caught the suspects in the act of unloading boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes from a motorized boat and transferring them into a waiting L300 van at the PCG sub-station in Purok 5, Poblacion. The brazen operation—allegedly carried out within a government facility—has raised serious concerns over internal accountability and the possible involvement of law enforcement personnel in illicit trade.

Seized during the operation were 205 master cases of cigarettes with an estimated value of ₱3.075 million, along with the vehicle used to transport the contraband. Authorities believe the shipment was part of a larger smuggling network operating in the coastal areas of Northern Mindanao.

In an official statement, the Philippine Coast Guard confirmed that it has launched a parallel investigation into the involvement of its personnel. PCG Spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the agency is fully cooperating with the Philippine National Police to ensure a thorough and impartial probe.

“The Command maintains a zero-tolerance policy against any form of illegal activity. Personnel found to have violated the law shall face administrative and criminal proceedings. If proven guilty, sanctions will be given, including dismissal from the Coast Guard service with forfeiture of benefits,” Cayabyab said.

She stressed that the incident does not reflect the standards upheld by the organization, emphasizing the PCG’s commitment to integrity and accountability in public service.

The arrest of uniformed personnel within their own facility underscores the growing challenge of curbing smuggling operations and internal corruption. Investigators are now working to determine the full extent of the operation, including the source of the contraband and possible links to larger syndicates.

Authorities have yet to release the identities of the suspects pending further investigation and the filing of appropriate charges.
