A 36-year-old man narrowly escaped drowning after attempting to swim while intoxicated along the shore of Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) on the afternoon of April 3, 2026.

The Philippine Coast Guard, through the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao and its Coast Guard Sub-Station Malita, responded swiftly to the emergency after personnel spotted the victim struggling in the water.

According to authorities, the man had entered the sea despite being heavily under the influence of alcohol. Coast Guard responders immediately launched a rescue operation, retrieving the victim within minutes and preventing what could have escalated into a fatal incident.

Initial assessment by responders confirmed that the beachgoer was intoxicated but did not sustain any physical injuries during the ordeal. He was subsequently monitored to ensure his safety following the rescue.

The incident has prompted renewed warnings from the Coast Guard, emphasizing the dangers of swimming while intoxicated. Officials stressed that alcohol significantly impairs judgment, coordination, and physical ability, increasing the likelihood of drowning and other water-related accidents.

Authorities are urging the public, especially those visiting coastal areas this summer season and during holiday breaks, to exercise caution and prioritize safety at all times.

“Swimming under the influence of alcohol poses serious risks not only to the individual but also to rescuers who may be called to respond,” the Coast Guard said, reiterating its call for responsible behavior in beaches and other aquatic environments.

The Coast Guard continues to maintain heightened vigilance in coastal areas across Southeastern Mindanao to ensure the safety of residents and tourists alike.
