CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Police authorities have launched an intensified hot pursuit operation against two male suspects involved in a grenade attack that left an eight-year-old boy injured in Sitio KM8, Barangay Lumbia, authorities confirmed.

The suspects were identified as Arnold Pat, 20, and his companion, Roel Pat Bacarro, who is reportedly the former’s partner. Bacarro is also the subject of an existing warrant of arrest and had previously evaded a police operation related to another case.
According to a report from Police Station 8 in Lumbia, the suspects arrived on a motorcycle and were armed with a shotgun, a bladed weapon, and an explosive grenade.
Initial investigation revealed that the suspects went to the residence of a foreman identified as Allan Abecio, allegedly to demand the delayed wages of Arnold Pat. Authorities said Pat intended to use the payment to settle a debt owed to Bacarro.
However, instead of locating the contractor who was reportedly in possession of the salary, the suspects confronted Abecio. When their demand went unanswered, tensions escalated. Bacarro allegedly fired his weapon before the two fled the scene.
Moments later, the suspects returned. In a shocking turn of events, Bacarro reportedly hurled a grenade into the area, which exploded and struck an eight-year-old boy in the foot. The child was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The attack has sparked alarm among residents, with police condemning the use of explosives in a civilian community, particularly over what appears to be a personal dispute.
The Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) said that initial findings point to a “personal grudge” as one of the motives behind the incident. However, investigators are continuing to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the suspects’ background and possible involvement in other criminal activities.
Authorities warned that the suspects are considered armed and dangerous. Police have called on the public to remain vigilant and report any information that may lead to their immediate arrest.
The incident highlights the escalating risks posed by armed individuals operating within communities, as well as the urgent need for swift law enforcement response to prevent further harm to civilians—especially vulnerable individuals such as children.
As of this writing, the condition of the injured child has not been disclosed, while manhunt operations continue across Cagayan de Oro and nearby areas.
