MIDSAYAP, Cotabato — Authorities have launched a thorough investigation after a college student was found dead in a rice field in Barangay Poblacion 1, Midsayap, Cotabato on Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 2026.

According to the Midsayap Municipal Police Station, the victim—whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed pending notification and consent of the family—was discovered by residents hanging from a mango tree in the middle of a rice field. The body was reportedly suspended using a nylon cord tied around the victim’s neck.

Initial reports identified the victim as a graduating Bachelor of Arts in Communication (BA Comm) student at a private college in Midsayap who was currently undergoing his on-the-job training (OJT). He was reportedly a resident of Alamada, Cotabato, but had been renting a place in Poblacion 6, Midsayap while completing his academic requirements.

Residents who discovered the body immediately alerted authorities, prompting a response from local police officers who secured the area and began conducting an initial investigation.

Signs Noted During Initial Examination

Responding authorities noted that aside from the apparent hanging, the victim also had several wounds on his hands, which investigators believe may have been caused by a sharp object. The presence of these injuries has prompted investigators to widen the scope of the inquiry to determine whether the incident may involve possible foul play or other circumstances.

Police said the victim’s remains were transported to a funeral home for further examination by forensic experts as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators are now gathering statements from individuals who had last contact with the student, including friends, classmates, and colleagues from his OJT placement, in an effort to piece together the events leading up to the tragic discovery.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing, and no conclusions have yet been drawn regarding the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police Urge Public to Avoid Speculation

Police officials urged the public to avoid spreading speculation or unverified claims while the investigation is still underway. They stressed that determining the true cause and circumstances of the student’s death will require careful forensic examination and witness accounts.

The tragic incident has left the local community in shock, particularly among students and residents in the town where the young man had been living while pursuing his studies.

A Serious Reminder on Mental Health

The incident also serves as a stark reminder that depression and mental health struggles are serious issues that many people silently face. Experts emphasize that emotional distress can affect anyone regardless of age, background, or circumstances, and that seeking help is an important and courageous step.

Mental health advocates remind the public that support and help are always available, and no one has to face emotional struggles alone.

Individuals who are experiencing overwhelming sadness, anxiety, or thoughts of self-harm are strongly encouraged to reach out to trusted family members, friends, counselors, or mental health professionals.

In the Philippines, those in crisis may contact the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) Crisis Hotline at 1553, which is available to provide immediate psychological support and guidance.

Authorities and mental health professionals continue to encourage communities to foster open conversations, compassion, and support systems to help those who may be struggling in silence.

Meanwhile, the Midsayap Municipal Police Station continues its investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death of the college student.
