LANTAWAN, Basilan — February 15, 2026

Two fishermen were rescued after their fishing boat capsized in rough seas off the waters of Lantawan, Basilan on Sunday, following a swift and coordinated response by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and local disaster responders.

In a statement, the Coast Guard said the rescue operation was led by the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM) through Coast Guard Station Isabela, with support from BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV 9702).

Vessel Overturned by Strong Waves

According to initial reports, the fishermen were aboard an eight-meter wooden fishing vessel when it was struck by large waves and strong currents, causing it to overturn in open waters. The incident occurred amid unstable sea conditions brought by rough weather in the area.

With their boat damaged and unable to float properly, the two men were left drifting at sea for nearly two hours, clinging to debris and personal flotation devices while waiting for help.

Passing Vessel Spotted Survivors

At around 11:00 a.m., a passing vessel, ML Sea Dayang, spotted the distressed fishermen and immediately reported the incident to authorities. The vessel coordinated with the crew of BRP Melchora Aquino, which was conducting maritime patrols in the area at the time.

Responding swiftly, the Coast Guard deployed a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to reach the survivors. The fishermen were carefully transferred from the water and brought aboard a sea ambulance operated in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Basilan.

Medical Assistance Provided

Upon rescue, medical personnel immediately administered first aid and conducted an initial medical assessment. The fishermen were treated for exhaustion and minor injuries sustained during their time at sea.

Authorities confirmed that both individuals were in stable condition and were later turned over to Coast Guard Sub-Station Lantawan for further assistance, documentation, and coordination with their families.

PCG Reiterates Safety Advisory

The Philippine Coast Guard reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring maritime safety and responding swiftly to emergencies, particularly in coastal and island communities that rely heavily on fishing for livelihood.

The agency also reminded small-scale fishermen and boat operators to regularly monitor weather advisories, ensure that vessels are seaworthy, and carry essential safety equipment before heading out to sea.

“With unpredictable sea conditions, preparedness and timely coordination can mean the difference between life and death,” the PCG emphasized.

Authorities continue to encourage maritime stakeholders and local communities to immediately report distress incidents to ensure rapid response and prevent further loss of life at sea.
