COTABATO CITY — A 57-year-old educator and taekwondo official from Basilan was rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke while performing his duties during the ongoing BARMMAA 2026, raising concern among athletes, organizers, and the education community.

The victim was identified as Catalino Catubig Jr., principal of Cadayan Elementary School in the Municipality of Akbar, Basilan, and a technical official in the taekwondo event.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred at around 5:00 p.m. inside the lobby of Iranun Palace, where Catubig was actively overseeing event proceedings. Witnesses said he suddenly experienced weakness and collapsed, prompting immediate assistance from colleagues and bystanders.
Medical personnel and fellow officials quickly responded, administering first aid before transferring him to the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center for urgent treatment.
Dr. Myra Borja Mangkabung confirmed that the episode was sudden and occurred while Catubig was fulfilling his responsibilities during the competition. She added that the swift response of the medical team was crucial in ensuring he received immediate care.
As of the latest update, Catubig remains in critical condition, with no further official medical bulletin released.
The incident has cast a somber mood over the regional sporting event, as athletes, coaches, and fellow officials continue to express concern and offer prayers for his recovery.
