MALITA, Davao Occidental — A six-year-old girl who was earlier reported missing was found dead on February 12, 2026, in Sitio Kabigon, Barangay Datu Danwata, in the town of Malita, Davao Occidental, prompting a full-scale investigation by authorities into a possible case of sexual assault and murder.

The victim, identified only by the alias “May-may,” was discovered lifeless and partially unclothed in Sitio Kabigon, Barangay Datu Danwata. Her condition raised suspicions that she may have been sexually abused before being killed.

According to initial reports, the child had gone out earlier in the day to gather vegetables near their home. When night fell and she failed to return, her family became alarmed and immediately began searching for her. Hours later, residents found her body in the nearby area.

Responding to the incident, personnel from the Revitalized Pulis sa Barangay (R-PSB) Malita Cluster 2, together with officers from the Malita Municipal Police Station and the Davao Occidental Provincial Forensic Unit, secured the crime scene to preserve possible evidence.

The operation was led by PSSg Ernie G. Aplacador under the supervision of PLTCOL Elinar Agustin, Overall Supervisor of the R-PSB. Authorities coordinated with forensic and investigative teams for the proper examination of the victim’s body and collection of physical evidence.

The Philippine National Police said an in-depth investigation is now underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death and to identify and arrest those responsible.

“We are exhausting all possible leads and evidence to ensure justice for the victim and her family,” police officials said, adding that forensic results and witness statements will play a crucial role in the case.

Local officials and community members expressed grief and outrage over the incident, calling for swift justice and stronger measures to protect children, especially in rural areas.

Authorities also reminded parents and guardians to remain vigilant, advising them not to allow children to go out alone, even in nearby areas, and to ensure that minors are always accompanied by a responsible adult. They also emphasized the importance of open communication between parents and children to help prevent similar tragedies.

As of this writing, the suspect or suspects remain unidentified. Police urged anyone with information related to the case to immediately report to the nearest police station.

The tragic death of “May-may” has shaken the community, underscoring the urgent need for collective action to safeguard the safety and well-being of children in Davao Occidental and beyond.
