SURALLAH, South Cotabato — A 15-year-old boy is receiving medical treatment after sustaining burn injuries when he allegedly set himself on fire inside their home in Surallah, South Cotabato, authorities and family members said.

The victim, identified only as “Edgar” to protect his identity as a minor, was rushed to a nearby hospital after neighbors responded to calls for help. He remains under observation for burns on parts of his body.
According to an initial account from the family, the incident happened while the boy’s grandmother was lying in state at their residence. The minor had reportedly invited his girlfriend to attend the wake, but after several hours passed without her arrival, he went home visibly distressed.
A sibling who was with him at the time said the boy suddenly declared his intention to harm himself, poured gasoline on his body, and ignited it. The sibling tried to put out the flames but was unable to do so alone and immediately sought help from neighbors, who assisted in extinguishing the fire and bringing the victim to the hospital.
Medical personnel said the boy sustained burns but is out of immediate danger, although treatment and recovery may take time. The family has appealed for financial assistance to help cover mounting hospital and medical expenses.
Local authorities have reminded the public to be vigilant for signs of emotional distress, especially among minors, and urged families and communities to seek early intervention and professional help.
