SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao del Sur — Mayor Datu Akmad Mitra Ampatuan survived an ambush after his convoy came under fire on Sunday morning, January 25, 2026, in Barangay Poblacion, the mother barangay of Shariff Aguak. While the mayor was unharmed, two of his security escorts were wounded in the attack and were immediately rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.

According to initial reports, unidentified armed men opened fire on the mayor’s vehicle while he was traveling through the area. Authorities quickly secured the scene and implemented heightened security measures to prevent further incidents.

The incident was confirmed by Anwar Emblawa, Secretary to the Mayor, who said the local chief executive was safely evacuated and remains in a secure location. “The mayor is safe. Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation into the incident,” Emblawa said.

Suspected Assailants Found Dead

In a major development later in the day, three individuals believed to be involved in the ambush were found dead in Sitio 24, Barangay Meta, Datu Unsay, approximately four to five kilometers from the site of the ambush.

Datu Unsay Chief of Police Capt. Argie Eyana said an abandoned vehicle bearing multiple bullet holes was discovered in the area, along with the bodies of the three suspects. Authorities are investigating whether the fatalities resulted from an armed encounter or other circumstances following the attack.

Police and military units have launched a joint investigation to establish the identities of the deceased, confirm their involvement in the ambush, and determine the motive behind the attack. Ballistics examination and forensic processing are ongoing.

Security forces remain on high alert across Shariff Aguak and neighboring towns amid concerns over possible retaliatory actions. Authorities urged the public to remain calm and to rely only on verified information as the investigation continues.
