ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR — In a strong demonstration of its commitment to peace-building and conflict resolution, the 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion of the 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division, Philippine Army, successfully led a series of coordination meetings and community-based mediations to address long-standing family feuds or rido in the province, culminating in a settlement on January 10, 2026.

The peace initiative began on January 8, 2026, when the 53rd Infantry Battalion, under the leadership of LTC Rolando E. Vargas Jr., INF (GSC), Commanding Officer, conducted a coordination meeting for rido settlement at the Barangay Hall of Benuatan in the Municipality of Dinas. The activity was carried out in close coordination with the Local Government Unit of Dinas and barangay officials, aiming to prevent the escalation of family disputes that threaten community safety and harmony.

The meeting was attended by key local leaders, including Dinas Mayor Hon. Eleazer Asoy, SB Nax Mangumpig, Barangay Captain Hon. Mosanna Anas Samen, and all barangay kagawads of Benuatan, reflecting strong local government support for peaceful dialogue and reconciliation.

During the discussions, stakeholders openly explored pathways toward resolving conflicts through dialogue, mutual respect, and shared responsibility among leaders. The engagement was seen as a crucial step in restoring trust and preventing violence in the community.

Building on this effort, the 53rd Infantry Battalion successfully facilitated a RIDO/Community-Based Conflict Settlement on January 10, 2026, at the battalion headquarters in Camp Maj. David P. Sabido, Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur. The activity provided a neutral and secure venue for mediating deep-rooted family and community disputes.

The settlement was attended by a broad coalition of stakeholders, including Mustapha P. Piang, Head of Provincial Muslim Affairs; Aslodin L. Sugadol, an elder from Labangan; Ali A. Hashim of MAPRU Dinas; and Hon. Asmawi C. Diwa, Punong Barangay. Law enforcement and peace partners were also present, including PEMS Felson Capampangan of the San Pablo Municipal Police Station and Norudin M. Mantolino of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team, highlighting a unified front among traditional leaders, local government, and security forces.

During the proceedings, the involved parties engaged in sincere negotiations, prioritizing the safety of their families and the well-being of their communities. The successful mediation underscored the effectiveness of community-based and culturally sensitive approaches in resolving sensitive conflicts.

The twin activities highlight the proactive role of the 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion in peace-building beyond traditional security operations. Through continuous engagement, mediation, and close coordination with local leaders, the “Matapat Troopers” remain steadfast in their mission to safeguard lives, restore harmony, and strengthen trust between the military and the people of Zamboanga del Sur.
