LANAO DEL SUR — In a significant boost to local peace and security efforts, four firearms were voluntarily surrendered through the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Program under the leadership of Capt. Cedric M. Genovaña, Commanding Officer of Alpha (ANUBIS) Company, 5th Infantry “Duty Bound” Battalion of the Philippine Army.

The surrendered weapons included a bolt-action shotgun, a semi-automatic shotgun, a pistol-caliber assault rifle, and a submachine gun—arms considered high-risk to public safety if left in civilian hands.

Army officials said the successful turnover was made possible through the active cooperation of local communities, particularly Barangay Lobo Basara and Carandangan in Lumba Bayabao, Barangay Buadibayawa in Mulondo, and Barangay Pindolonan in Taraka. Their collective participation underscored the growing trust between residents and security forces, and highlighted the critical role of grassroots engagement in sustaining peace.

“This achievement shows that peace and security are best attained when communities and authorities work hand in hand,” military sources said, noting that voluntary surrender initiatives help prevent armed violence and reduce the proliferation of loose firearms in conflict-prone areas.

The SALW Program is a key component of the government’s broader peace and security strategy, aimed at encouraging civilians to surrender illegally held weapons in exchange for safety assurances and community stability. Authorities emphasized that continued dialogue and cooperation with barangay leaders remain essential in maintaining order and protecting civilians.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to support local peacebuilding initiatives, stressing that community-driven efforts are vital in strengthening security and fostering long-term stability across Lanao del Sur and neighboring areas.
