CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A 19-year-old Grade 11 student was found dead with his hands bound and multiple stab wounds in a secluded portion of Purok 4B, Kamakawan, Barangay Gusa, on Wednesday morning, December 10, 2025. The brutality of the attack has sent shockwaves through the community, further underscoring public concern over the rising cases of violent crimes in the city.

The victim, identified as Roylan Lopez, a resident of Barangay Gusa, was discovered lying lifeless in thick vegetation, his hands tied with a rubber material. According to initial police findings, Lopez sustained at least eight stab wounds in the back and two more in the front, along with visible bruises on his face and body — indicating he may have been beaten before being killed.
PLT. Natalio Flores Mata III, Deputy Station Commander of the Agora Police Station, said the nature of the wounds suggests that the suspect likely attacked from behind. “Most of the stab wounds were to the back area — four in the lower portion and four in the upper portion. Another wound was found on the left chest and under the abdomen,” he reported. Investigators believe the assailant may have harbored personal grudge or anger toward the victim.
The victim’s family said they had spent Tuesday night together at Gaston Park to witness the Grand Launching of Pasko de Oro. Roylan was last seen alive shortly after the event. His motorcycle and a blanket he brought along were discovered near the crime scene.
Police investigators are now in the process of identifying potential witnesses, although the lack of CCTV cameras in the area has made the probe more challenging. Authorities continue to explore the motive behind the killing.
The case has stirred fear among residents, many of whom expressed heartbreak and outrage that such violence could occur during what is supposed to be a season of joy and unity. “Lisod kaayo dawaton nga sa panahon sa Pasko, naa napuy pamilya nga nag-antos sa dakong kasakit,” a resident lamented. Parents have also voiced deep concern for the safety of young people in the city, urging vigilance and stronger community protection.
This incident adds to a disturbing trend of increasingly brutal crimes in various parts of Cagayan de Oro and nearby areas. In recent months, authorities have recorded a spike in killings marked by excessive violence, prompting renewed calls for intensified police presence, faster investigations, and community cooperation.
As the investigation continues, the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office assures the public that they are working relentlessly to track down the perpetrator. “Dili kini pasagdan. We will not stop until justice is served,” PLT Mata stressed.
Residents are urged to remain cautious, especially during late hours, and report any suspicious activity as authorities strengthen efforts to curb violent crime.
Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to coordinate with the nearest police station.
