MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon — A criminology student who allegedly massacred his own family after being exposed for faking his graduation and misusing money sent by his parents has been arrested by police in Malaybalay City.
The suspect, John Kyler Labora Andohon, 23, was captured around 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, at his former boarding house in Barangay 1, Purok 4, after four months in hiding.
Authorities said Andohon, who had stopped pursuing his criminology studies in 2023 but kept it from his family, killed his father Cocoy, 50; his mother Vangie, 48; and his 14-year-old brother Ivan on May 21, 2025, inside their home in Sitio Andohon, Purok 11, Barangay Managok. Investigators believe he struck them with a sledgehammer and a steel pipe while they were asleep.
The massacre was reportedly triggered after his parents discovered he was not among the list of criminology graduates, despite years of financial support. Police said the money, meant for his studies, had instead been squandered on vices. The family had even prepared for a graduation banquet the night they were killed.
Relatives condemned the betrayal, saying they felt deceived after years of trust and sacrifice. “We trusted him, especially his parents, who gave everything for his education. But he deceived us for years, only to repay them with their lives,” one family member said.
Two younger siblings, aged 11 and 8, survived the attack and later identified their elder brother as the assailant. They are now under the care of relatives.
Most Wanted Arrest
Andohon had been included in the Most Wanted Persons list in Northern Mindanao and Bukidnon Province. A warrant of arrest for two counts of parricide and one count of murder was issued against him on September 11. The court has not recommended bail for his temporary release.
Bukidnon Police Provincial Director PCol. Jovit Culaway described the arrest as a breakthrough in delivering justice for the victims. Police investigators also noted that Andohon may undergo psychiatric evaluation as he awaits trial.
He is currently detained at the Malaybalay City Police Station.
