Isabela City, Basilan – In a continued effort to uphold human rights and provide legal support to Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), the Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission – Basilan Provincial Office (BHRC-Basilan) recently conducted a Facility Monitoring and Legal Aid Clinic at the Basilan Provincial Jail.

A total of 64 PDLs benefited from free legal consultations facilitated by volunteer lawyers: Atty. Rosebell Sanson, Atty. Nur-Aziza Gagara, Atty. Careema Abdulajid, Atty. Kim Khaled Aguisanda, and Atty. Rayhana Sabtalul. The legal clinic addressed pressing concerns of the detainees, including case status, legal procedures, and the rights they are entitled to while in detention.

Aside from legal services, BHRC-Basilan also distributed hygiene kits and packed lunches to the beneficiaries, reflecting the agency’s holistic approach to meeting the basic needs of those in custody.

The activity also served as an opportunity for BHRC personnel to inspect the facility conditions and ensure that they comply with human rights standards.

This initiative is part of BHRC’s broader commitment to strengthening human rights protection for all, including the often-overlooked population of detainees, and to affirm that no one is left behind in the pursuit of justice and dignity inside correctional facilities.
