Patikul, Sulu — July 22, 2025 — Authorities dealt a major blow to smuggling operations in Sulu as operatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP), in coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC), intercepted a large shipment of smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately ₱8.75 million during a joint anti-smuggling operation in Barangay Tandu Bagua, Patikul.
The operation stemmed from reports provided by concerned citizens about suspicious activities in the area. Acting on this tip, law enforcement agents discovered 100 master cases—or around 50,000 packs—of suspected smuggled cigarettes bearing the brands Champion, New Castle, and Netizen.
Two suspects, known by their aliases “Dendasil,” 35, and “Alpajal,” 25, both residents of Patikul, were arrested at the site. The duo failed to present legal documents for the transport and possession of the contraband. Authorities said the cigarettes were intended for illegal distribution across the province of Sulu.
The confiscated goods and the arrested individuals are now under the custody of the Sulu Maritime Police Station, pending proper documentation and the filing of appropriate charges.
Police Brigadier General Jaysen C. De Guzman, Regional Director of Police Regional Office – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR), commended the swift and coordinated action of the operating units.
“This successful operation highlights the critical role of community support and strong inter-agency cooperation in curbing illegal activities like smuggling in the region. PRO BAR remains steadfast in our commitment to protect our community and safeguard the region’s economic integrity,” De Guzman stated.
Authorities reiterated their appeal to the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as part of the ongoing effort to curb smuggling and other illegal trades in the region.
