COTABATO CITY — Authorities seized multiple cartons of smuggled cigarettes during an operation conducted at around 10:30 a.m. on July 11, 2025, inside the Mega Market. The operation was led by the Cotabato City Police in coordination with other concerned units.
One minor was apprehended at the scene, tearfully pleading innocence, claiming no knowledge of the illicit activity. The incident sparked concern among witnesses, with many expressing sympathy for the young individual caught in the middle of what appears to be a larger smuggling operation.
Mayor Mohammad Ali “Bruce” Matabalao, known for his “Para sa Lahat” governance campaign, was quick to respond, assuring the public that only those truly responsible for the smuggling will be held accountable.
“We will not let innocent individuals, especially minors, carry the burden of crimes they did not commit. Our investigation will focus on identifying and prosecuting the real perpetrators,” the mayor said.
Authorities are still determining the total volume and estimated value of the confiscated cigarettes.
Shortly after the operation, Mayor Matabalao personally visited the site to assess the situation and ordered immediate steps to bring order and reform to the Mega Market. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding law and order while protecting the rights of all citizens, especially the youth.
Investigations are ongoing.
