DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Although Tropical Depression “LUIS” remains far from Mindanao, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned residents across the island to remain alert as localized thunderstorms may still trigger flash floods and landslides over the next 24 hours.
In its Regional Weather Forecast for Mindanao issued at 5:00 AM on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, PAGASA’s Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) reported that as of 3:00 PM Monday, the center of Tropical Depression LUIS was estimated over the coastal waters of Maconacon, Isabela at 17.5°N, 122.6°E.
The tropical depression continues to pack maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center, with gustiness reaching 60 kilometers per hour, and is moving northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour.
Despite the cyclone’s location over Northern Luzon, PAGASA said Mindanao will generally experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and localized thunderstorms, mainly due to localized weather systems.
However, weather forecasters cautioned that severe thunderstorms could still produce heavy downpours capable of causing flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying, flood-prone, and mountainous areas.
Light to Moderate Winds, Slight to Moderate Seas
Across Mindanao, light to moderate south to southwest winds are expected to prevail, while coastal waters will remain slight to moderate, with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 2.5 meters. Although sea conditions remain generally favorable for most small fishing vessels, PAGASA advised mariners to continue exercising caution, especially during thunderstorms that may bring sudden strong winds and rough seas.
Rain Showers Expected Across All Mindanao Regions
The forecast indicates that virtually all provinces and cities in Mindanao will experience partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times with rain showers or thunderstorms from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning.
The weather pattern covers the following areas:
- Zamboanga Peninsula – including Zamboanga City, Isabela City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay.
- Northern Mindanao – Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental.
- Davao Region – Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental.
- SOCCSKSARGEN – North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani.
- Caraga Region – Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands.
- Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) – Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte, and Maguindanao del Sur.
Temperature Outlook
PAGASA forecasts daytime temperatures across Mindanao to remain generally warm, ranging from 20°C to 35°C, depending on location.
Among the cooler areas are:
- Bukidnon: 20°C to 32°C
- Lanao del Sur: 20°C to 31°C
- Lanao del Norte: 21°C to 31°C
Warmer conditions are expected in several coastal provinces, including:
- Zamboanga City and Isabela City: up to 35°C
- Agusan del Norte: up to 35°C
- Zamboanga del Norte, Surigao provinces, and Dinagat Islands: up to 34°C
Public Advised to Stay Weather-Aware
PAGASA reminded residents to remain vigilant, particularly during the afternoon and evening when localized thunderstorms are more likely to develop. Sudden heavy rainfall may lead to flooding in urban areas and landslides in mountainous communities.
Motorists are likewise advised to exercise caution during periods of reduced visibility caused by heavy rain, while fishermen and operators of small sea vessels should monitor the latest weather advisories before venturing offshore.
Authorities continue to monitor the movement of Tropical Depression LUIS, although it is currently not expected to make a direct impact on Mindanao. Nevertheless, localized thunderstorms remain the primary weather concern across the region through Wednesday morning.
