DAVAO CITY – A woman who was critically wounded in a domestic shooting in Barangay Ubalde, Agdao District, Davao City, has succumbed to her injuries after several hours of fighting for her life, while her sister-in-law remains hospitalized as authorities intensify their manhunt for the alleged gunman.

The fatality was confirmed by Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson Police Major Ma. Teresita Gaspan, who said the victim, identified only by her alias “Nita,” died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds during the attack on Sunday evening, July 5.

Her sister-in-law, identified by the alias “Gina,” continues to receive medical treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) after suffering gunshot wounds during the same incident.

Police have identified the primary suspect as the victim’s own husband, known only by the alias “Fernand” Authorities have launched an intensified hot pursuit operation to locate and arrest him.

Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly

Based on the police investigation, the shooting occurred at around 7:00 to 7:15 p.m. along Orchids Street in Barangay Ubalde while the victims were reportedly selling fruits.

Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a long-standing domestic conflict between the victim and her husband.

According to Police Major Gaspan, jealousy and repeated arguments between the couple are being investigated as the primary motive behind the shooting.

Family members disclosed that the couple had been experiencing frequent marital disputes for quite some time. They also revealed that Jema had allegedly received threats prior to the attack.

Concerned for her safety, Jove reportedly went to the fruit stand where Jema was working after learning about the threats. However, she also became a victim after she was struck by gunfire during the incident.

Relatives said Jema sustained gunshot wounds to the back of the head and chest, leaving her in critical condition. Despite efforts by doctors, she later died from her injuries.

Jove suffered gunshot wounds to the shoulder and waist and remains under medical care.

Charges Being Prepared

With Jema’s death, authorities are preparing to file parricide charges against the suspect for allegedly killing his wife, along with frustrated murder for the shooting of Jove.

Police said the suspect immediately fled after the shooting and remains at large.

The DCPO has intensified its follow-up operations and appealed to anyone with information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts to immediately coordinate with the nearest police station.

Children to Receive Psychosocial Support

Police Major Gaspan also said the DCPO, in coordination with the Barangay Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), will provide psychosocial intervention and counseling to the children of the slain victim.

Authorities said the children were deeply traumatized by the incident, with one reportedly witnessing the aftermath of the shooting.

Investigation Continues

Investigators continue gathering witness statements and forensic evidence to establish the complete sequence of events surrounding the deadly shooting.

Police reiterated that the case underscores the dangers of unresolved domestic violence and reaffirmed their commitment to bringing the suspect to justice.
