KAPATAGAN, Lanao del Norte — A 24-year-old female security guard was shot dead while on duty at the entrance of a provincial hospital in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte, in the early hours of Saturday, July 4, in a brazen attack that has shocked the local community and prompted an intensive police manhunt.

The victim was identified as Irene B. Cabriana, a resident of Kidalos, Kapatagan, who was assigned as a security guard at the Provincial Hospital in Maranding.

According to the initial police investigation, the shooting occurred at around 1:54 a.m. while Cabriana was stationed at the hospital’s main entrance. Authorities said two unidentified suspects arrived on board a motorcycle. The back rider, who was reportedly wearing a black hooded jacket, shorts, and a face covering, disembarked from the motorcycle and approached the victim before suddenly shooting her in the head with a handgun.

Cabriana sustained a fatal gunshot wound and died instantly at the scene.

After carrying out the attack, the gunman immediately returned to the waiting motorcycle, and the suspects fled toward the direction of Maranding-Lala, Lanao del Norte.

Police received the report of the incident at around 2:00 a.m., while the initial investigation at the crime scene concluded at approximately 3:30 a.m.

Investigators have coordinated with the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) to process the crime scene and recover physical evidence that could help identify the perpetrators. Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the killing, while the identities of the suspects remain unknown.

A hot pursuit operation has been launched as law enforcement authorities continue tracking down those responsible for the attack.

Police have appealed to the public to immediately report any information that may help identify or locate the suspects to the nearest police station.

Community mourns young criminology graduate

Cabriana’s death has drawn widespread grief, particularly from the Colegio de Kapatagan, where she graduated in 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology.

In a strongly worded statement, the institution condemned what it described as the “brutal and senseless killing” of one of its graduates.

The school said the attack was not only directed at Cabriana but also against justice, public service, and the sanctity of human life.

“No one who chooses to serve and protect others should ever become a victim of such a heinous act of violence,” the statement read.

The institution expressed sympathy to Cabriana’s family, friends, classmates, and colleagues, remembering her dedication, courage, and commitment to public service despite her young age.

The school also urged all law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial, and swift investigation to ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, prosecuted, and held accountable under the full force of the law.

“As an institution that nurtures future protectors of society, Colegio de Kapatagan remains steadfast in its commitment to the rule of law, justice, and the protection of every human life. We stand united against violence in all its forms,” the school said.

The institution concluded its statement by calling for justice for Cabriana and expressing hope that her tragic death would strengthen the collective resolve to reject violence and create safer communities for those serving in the line of duty.

The killing has sparked outrage among residents, many expressing concern over the brazenness of the attack, which was carried out inside the vicinity of a public hospital while the victim was performing her official duties.

As of this writing, police continue their investigation and have not released information indicating whether the attack was work-related or personally motivated. Authorities vowed to pursue all possible leads until those behind the fatal shooting are brought to justice.
