KALAWIT, Zamboanga del Norte — Authorities dealt a significant blow to the illegal tobacco trade after confiscating an estimated ₱10.2 million worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes during a coordinated anti-smuggling operation conducted in the municipality of Kalawit on Friday, June 19.

The operation, spearheaded by the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Intelligence Unit (ZNPIU) with support from the 1st and 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Companies, resulted in the seizure of a large volume of contraband tobacco products from two separate locations in the province.
The enforcement action was carried out through intelligence-driven operations led by PLtCol. Edwin Verzon, Force Commander of the 2nd Mobile Force Company, and involved a strategic deployment of law enforcement personnel in Barangays Gatas and Potungan.
Initial reports showed that authorities intercepted approximately 105 master cases and 230 reams of assorted alleged smuggled cigarettes at a checkpoint in Barangay Gatas during the early hours of June 19. Based on the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Standard Price Index, the seized tobacco products were initially estimated to be worth more than ₱6 million.
Further operations conducted in Barangay Potungan led to the discovery and confiscation of another large shipment of alleged smuggled cigarettes, bringing the total estimated value of all recovered contraband to ₱10.2 million.
Police records indicated that around ₱4.1 million worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes were seized in Barangay Gatas, while an additional ₱6.1 million worth was confiscated in Barangay Potungan.
The recovered cigarette products were immediately placed under police custody for proper inventory, documentation, and the filing of appropriate cases. Investigators are now conducting an extensive probe to determine the origin of the shipments, identify those involved in the illegal transport, and trace the intended recipients of the contraband goods.
Authorities have yet to disclose the identities of any suspects, and no arrests had been announced as of press time. However, law enforcement officials said efforts are underway to dismantle the syndicate believed to be behind the smuggling operation.
The operation highlights the continuing campaign of provincial authorities against illicit trade, which deprives the government of millions of pesos in taxes and negatively impacts legitimate businesses.
Officials emphasized that border monitoring, checkpoint operations, and intelligence-gathering activities across Zamboanga del Norte will be intensified to prevent the entry and distribution of smuggled goods.
“Our priority is safeguarding the local economy and ensuring compliance with tax and trade regulations,” authorities said in a statement. “Those engaged in the illegal transport and distribution of smuggled products should take this as a warning that law enforcement units remain vigilant and ready to take decisive action against violators.”
The confiscated cigarettes are expected to undergo further verification and processing as authorities prepare possible charges for violations of customs, taxation, and other applicable laws.
The latest seizure is among the largest anti-smuggling operations recorded in Zamboanga del Norte this year and underscores the government’s continuing efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit tobacco products in the region.
