DAVAO CITY — In a powerful display of solidarity and compassion, the people of Davao City are extending a lifeline to communities devastated by last week’s magnitude 7.8 earthquake, sending thousands of relief supplies and deploying dozens of frontline personnel to assist in ongoing recovery efforts across southern Mindanao.

On Tuesday, June 16, the City Government of Davao dispatched 4,000 boxes of welfare goods and 3,000 one-liter bottles of drinking water to some of the areas hardest hit by the powerful quake, including General Santos City, Sarangani Province, and Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental.
The relief mission is being carried out by a 42-member team composed of personnel from key local government offices, including the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), City Engineer’s Office (CEO), City Mayor’s Office (CMO), Security Cluster, and other frontline agencies tasked with responding to emergencies and disasters.
The deployment underscores Davao City’s commitment to supporting neighboring communities as they grapple with the aftermath of one of the strongest earthquakes to strike the region in recent years.
Communities Struggling to Recover
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which struck southern Mindanao last week, left a trail of destruction across several provinces and cities. Thousands of families were displaced as homes, public infrastructure, and livelihoods suffered extensive damage.
Many residents remain in temporary shelters while authorities continue damage assessments and safety inspections. Access to clean drinking water, food supplies, healthcare services, and emergency shelter remains among the most urgent needs in affected communities.
Recognizing the scale of the disaster, the City Government of Davao immediately mobilized resources to assist areas struggling to recover from the catastrophe.
“This assistance forms part of the City Government of Davao’s support for the ongoing relief and recovery efforts in areas severely affected by the earthquake,” the local government said.
More Than Relief Goods
The latest shipment is only one component of Davao City’s broader humanitarian response.
Even before the current relief convoy was dispatched, the city had already been actively involved in supporting earthquake-stricken areas. Last week, the city government partnered with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region XI to facilitate the delivery of potable water to affected communities where access to safe drinking water had been disrupted.
The CDRRMO also played a critical role in emergency medical operations by assisting in the evacuation of patients from Sarangani to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City. The transfers ensured that patients requiring specialized treatment and urgent medical care could receive appropriate services despite the challenges posed by the disaster.
For many affected families, these interventions have provided much-needed relief amid difficult conditions.
A Regional Effort of Solidarity
Beyond the trucks loaded with food and water, the relief mission reflects a broader spirit of regional cooperation and resilience that often emerges in times of crisis.
As communities across Mindanao continue to rebuild homes, restore livelihoods, and recover from the earthquake’s impact, local governments, emergency responders, and humanitarian organizations are working together to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
The City Government of Davao said it remains in close coordination with various government agencies and local government units to accelerate relief delivery and strengthen recovery efforts in affected areas.
While the road to recovery may be long for thousands of earthquake survivors, the continuing flow of assistance serves as a reminder that they are not facing the challenge alone.
From Davao City to the disaster zones, the message is clear: in the face of tragedy, communities across Mindanao stand united in helping one another rise again.
