DAVAO CITY — A 12-year-old boy lost his life after being struck by a fallen tree while seeking shelter from heavy rain and strong winds in the mountainous area of Marilog District on Saturday morning, June 13.
The tragic incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. in Sitio Kawayan Lower B, Barangay Tamugan, where the victim, identified as Angelo Laid, had taken refuge inside a small community shed along with his one-year-old younger sibling as inclement weather swept through the area.
According to barangay responder Eboy Gahoc, the siblings sought shelter after rainfall and powerful gusts of wind intensified in the area. However, tragedy struck when a large tree suddenly toppled and crashed onto the structure where they were staying.
The falling tree directly hit Angelo, causing fatal injuries that led to his immediate death. His younger sibling miraculously survived the incident unharmed despite being with him at the time.
Residents rushed to the scene following the collapse, while local responders and authorities conducted initial rescue and assessment operations. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, particularly as the victim was described as a young boy simply trying to stay safe from the worsening weather.
Authorities said the strong winds and rain may have weakened the tree, causing it to collapse without warning. The accident highlights the dangers posed by severe weather conditions, especially in upland and rural communities where large trees are common near homes and public structures.
