A member of the Highway Patrol Group was wounded after being ambushed by unidentified armed suspects while conducting an anti-carnapping operation along the national highway in Poblacion, Matalam, North Cotabato on Tuesday evening, May 12.

The victim was identified as Police Staff Master Sergeant (PSMS) Noel M. Demate, a resident of Pigcawayan and a member of the North Cotabato Provincial Highway Patrol Team (NCPHPT).
Based on initial police reports, the incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. near the town’s roundabout area while HPG personnel were conducting a routine anti-carnapping checkpoint and inspection under the supervision of PMAJ James S. Baugbog.
Without warning, a suspect riding a Bajaj motorcycle reportedly approached the officer and opened fire at close range, hitting Demate in the chin. The assailant immediately fled the scene toward Kabacan, North Cotabato.
The wounded officer was quickly brought to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities have yet to release an official update on his condition but confirmed that he is under medical care.
The attack triggered tension in the area, prompting the deployment of additional police forces. Authorities immediately launched a hot pursuit and manhunt operation in nearby towns to track down and arrest the suspect.
Investigators are still determining the motive behind the shooting. However, police are looking into the possibility that it may be connected to the intensified campaign against carnapping and other illegal activities along major highways in the province.
Security has since been tightened in checkpoints across North Cotabato as law enforcement continues its pursuit. Authorities are also urging witnesses to cooperate and provide any information that may help resolve the case and identify the suspect.
The investigation is ongoing.
