LAMITAN CITY, Basilan — Grief and calls for justice continue to grow following the reported death of a young army trainee from Lamitan City, Basilan, who allegedly died during formal military training in Tarlac only days after beginning his journey toward fulfilling his dream of becoming a soldier.

The trainee was identified as Junel Flores, a resident of Barangay Colonia, Lamitan City.
In a statement released online, the Officers and Enlisted Personnel of the 18th Infantry Battalion expressed their condolences to the family of Flores, describing him as a fallen warrior whose dream was to serve the country.
“The Officers and Enlisted Personnel of the 18th Infantry (DEO ET PATRIA) Battalion extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Late-Candidate Soldier Junel Flores. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may God grant strength and comfort to his loved ones during this difficult time. Fly high, warrior. Your soul is now with God,” the statement read.
According to relatives, Flores left Basilan on May 19 to attend his oath-taking ceremony and begin formal military training. Family members said the young trainee had long aspired to wear the military uniform and hoped to build a better future through service to the nation.
However, tragedy struck only days into his training.
The family said they received information on May 26 that Flores had allegedly collapsed during training and was rushed to a hospital. They were reportedly informed that the trainee fainted due to exhaustion and extreme heat while participating in military exercises.
Several hours later, the family was informed that Flores could no longer be revived and was declared dead.
The incident left relatives devastated, especially after learning that Flores had reportedly been in formal training for only two days before his death.
Questions surrounding the circumstances of his death further intensified after family members allegedly noticed bruises and visible marks on different parts of his body, including his head, when they arrived at the hospital.
The discovery prompted the family to publicly seek answers and demand a thorough and impartial investigation into what truly happened during the training.
In an emotional appeal, Victorina Flores, the trainee’s mother, expressed heartbreak over the sudden loss of her son and pleaded for justice.
“Hindi namin matanggap ang nangyari sa anak namin. Pangarap niyang maging sundalo at lumaban para sa kinabukasan niya. Gusto lang namin malaman ang totoo kung ano talaga ang nangyari sa kanya,” she said.
(“We cannot accept what happened to our son. It was his dream to become a soldier and fight for his future. We only want to know the truth about what really happened to him.”)
The incident has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many netizens expressing sympathy for the bereaved family while urging authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the trainee’s death.
Advocates and concerned citizens also called for accountability and for military institutions to ensure the safety and welfare of trainees undergoing rigorous exercises.
As of posting time, concerned authorities have yet to release an official statement detailing the exact cause of Flores’ death or whether a formal investigation has been initiated.
The family, meanwhile, continues to mourn the loss of a son they described as hardworking, determined, and deeply committed to achieving his dream of serving the country.
