COLUMBIO, Sultan Kudarat — What initially appeared to be a routine vehicular accident turned into a significant anti-smuggling operation after police discovered hundreds of thousands of pesos worth of illicit cigarettes, leading to the arrest of two individuals on April 11, 2026.

Authorities identified the suspects by their aliases “Jamoy,” 31, and “Ansing,” 23, both residents of Cotabato City. They were apprehended in Barangay Poblacion, Columbio, after law enforcement officers uncovered suspected smuggled cigarettes inside their damaged vehicle.

Tire Blowout Triggers Incident

Initial investigation revealed that the suspects were traveling from Barangay Poblacion en route to Barangay Telafas when the vehicle’s front right tire suddenly burst at around 11:30 a.m. The blowout caused the driver to lose control, eventually crashing into the railing of a bridge.

Despite the impact, both occupants escaped unharmed, although the vehicle sustained visible damage.

Plain View Discovery Leads to Arrest

Police officers responded swiftly after receiving a report from a concerned citizen. Upon arrival, authorities conducted a routine inspection of the scene and noticed several packs of cigarettes in plain view at the back of the vehicle.

A more thorough examination revealed multiple reams of imported cigarette products suspected to have been illegally transported.

When questioned, the suspects failed to present any documentation authorizing the possession, transport, or sale of the cigarettes, prompting their immediate arrest.

₱339K Worth of Illicit Goods Seized

Authorities recovered smuggled cigarettes with an estimated market value of ₱339,704.96. According to statements from the suspects, the contraband originated from Cotabato City and was intended for delivery to Koronadal City.

An inventory of the seized items was conducted on-site in the presence of the suspects and a barangay official, ensuring transparency in the operation.

The suspects, along with the confiscated goods, were later transported to the police station for proper documentation and the filing of appropriate charges. The seized cigarettes are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs in General Santos City for further processing.

Police Leadership Commends Swift Action

Arnold P. Ardiente, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 12 (PRO 12), lauded the responding personnel for their prompt and vigilant response.

He emphasized that the incident highlights the crucial role of community reporting and proactive policing in curbing illegal activities, particularly smuggling operations that undermine lawful trade and government revenue.

Authorities continue to remind the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, as law enforcement intensifies its campaign against illicit trade across the region.
