ARAKAN, Cotabato — A 42-year-old man died after accidentally falling from a dangerous section of Matigol Falls during a family outing, reigniting urgent calls for stricter safety measures at one of Mindanao’s tallest waterfalls.

The victim was identified as Ronald Carlos “Bobong” Mangga, a resident of Barangay Maria Caridad. According to initial reports, Mangga was attempting to take a photograph near the edge of the falls when he suddenly slipped and lost his balance, plunging into the rocky lower portion of the site.

He sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures in his legs and other critical wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Mangga was declared dead on arrival due to the extent of his injuries.

Adding to the tragedy, a photo taken moments before the incident has circulated online, described by relatives as his “final image.” A social media post shared by a content creator revealed that Mangga had asked his child to take the picture—an innocent request that would unknowingly become his last.

Renewed Safety Concerns

Matigol Falls, considered among the highest waterfalls in North Cotabato with an estimated height of around 500 meters, is a popular destination for tourists because of its towering cascades and natural pools. However, authorities have long warned about its steep cliffs, slippery rocks, and deep, hazardous sections.

Following the incident, residents and visitors renewed their appeal to local government officials to install permanent barriers, clearer warning signs, and additional safety infrastructure in high-risk areas of the falls.

This is not the first fatal incident at the site. Records show that in December 2018, a tourist guide died after being swept away by strong currents, while another tourist fell to their death in March 2019.

Authorities Urge Public Vigilance

Local authorities are urging tourists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when approaching cliff edges or attempting to take photos in risky locations.

Safety Reminders for Tourists Visiting Waterfalls:

  • Avoid standing near edges or unstable rocks, especially in wet or slippery conditions.
  • Do not attempt risky poses or selfies near cliffs or strong currents.
  • Wear proper footwear with good grip when trekking or exploring natural areas.
  • Follow all posted warnings and local guidelines, even if barriers seem minimal.
  • Supervise children closely and avoid distractions in high-risk areas.
  • Check weather conditions, as rain can make surfaces more slippery and currents stronger.
  • Stay within designated safe zones and avoid restricted areas.

As the Mangga family prepares for the victim’s wake, an outpouring of condolences continues from the community. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder that while natural attractions like Matigol Falls offer breathtaking beauty, they also demand respect and caution from those who visit.
