TUPI, South Cotabato — A 35-year-old farmer was declared dead on arrival at a hospital after being shot multiple times by a suspected drunken assailant in Barangay Simbo, Tupi, on Monday, April 27, authorities said.

The victim was identified by the Tupi Municipal Police Station (MPS) as Algen Cabale Buenavista, a resident of the area. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds in different parts of his body.
Initial police investigation revealed that Buenavista was tending to his piggery and assisting in the delivery of piglets when the suspect, identified only by the alias “Nonoy,” allegedly entered the area and opened fire at around 11:00 a.m.
Witnesses said the incident may have escalated from a confrontation. Reports indicate that prior to the shooting, the suspect had been drinking and was allegedly firing a gun in a nearby area. Buenavista reportedly approached him to intervene and prevent further danger, but the situation quickly turned into a heated argument.
Authorities believe the attack stemmed from a personal dispute between the victim and the suspect, who are also said to be acquaintances.
Buenavista was immediately rushed to the Polomolok Municipal Hospital in Barangay Pagalungan, Polomolok, but attending physicians declared him dead on arrival.
Police recovered two spent cartridges and one dud bullet from the crime scene, believed to have been fired from a caliber .40 firearm.
Following the incident, the Tupi MPS launched a hot pursuit operation against the suspect, who fled after the shooting. Coordination with neighboring police stations is ongoing to facilitate his immediate arrest.
Investigators continue to gather evidence and statements from witnesses to build a stronger case against the suspect.
Authorities urged the public to avoid engaging in confrontations, especially when firearms are involved, warning that personal disputes can quickly escalate into deadly violence.
