Jolo, Sulu – Vice President Sara Duterte personally visited the survivors and families affected by the tragic sinking of the passenger vessel MV Trisha Kerstin 3 near Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan, expressing heartfelt condolences and pledging support to those impacted by the disaster. The incident, which claimed at least 18 lives and left 13 missing, has left hundreds of families reeling in grief.

On Monday, February 9, 2026, VP Duterte arrived in Jolo, Sulu, where she first visited the families of the victims to offer personal condolences and provide immediate assistance, including cash aid, rice, and grocery items from the Office of the Vice President. She emphasized the importance of standing with the affected families and survivors during such difficult times.

The Vice President then proceeded to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral in Barangay Walled City, Jolo, where she led prayers of thanksgiving for the survival of the hundreds of passengers who made it through the tragedy. During her visit, VP Duterte met with survivors, including children and families, taking time to listen to their experiences and check on their well-being.

“This is a time to stand together with our kababayans. Let us pray for the safety of those still missing, and for the strength of our rescuers who are tirelessly working to save lives,” VP Duterte said. She also used the occasion to reiterate the need for enhanced maritime safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The Vice President’s visit to Jolo is part of a broader effort to support the victims, with plans to travel to Zamboanga City later to meet additional families affected by the shipwreck. Authorities and local governments are coordinating with national agencies to ensure continuous assistance for survivors and the families of the deceased.

In a public message, VP Duterte reminded travelers of the importance of maritime safety: wearing life jackets, avoiding sailing in bad weather, following the instructions of the crew, observing passenger limits, and keeping emergency equipment accessible.

Through her visit, Vice President Sara Duterte sought not only to extend aid and condolences but also to inspire resilience among communities struck by maritime disasters. “We must love and protect the Philippines—for God, for our country, and for every Filipino family,” she said.

As search and rescue operations continue in Basilan’s waters, the nation remains united in prayer for the missing and gratitude for the survivors who made it through the harrowing ordeal.
