BASILAN PROVINCE — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully rescued a distressed motor launch off the coast of Basilan on Sunday after it suffered a steering failure while en route to Zamboanga City, authorities said.

The Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM), through BRP Tubbataha (MRRV-4401), responded to the emergency involving ASX Express 2, which was found drifting approximately 1.13 nautical miles from Pangasahan Island, Basilan.

The rescue unfolded as BRP Tubbataha was already conducting search and rescue operations (SAROPS) for the ill-fated MV Trisha Kerstin 3 in waters near Baluk-Baluk Island, also in Basilan. Despite the ongoing mission, the Coast Guard vessel immediately diverted after receiving a distress call from the captain of ASX Express 2.

According to initial reports, the passenger boat encountered a steering casualty while traveling from Banguingui, Sulu Province, to Zamboanga City, leaving it unable to maneuver safely at sea. Recognizing the imminent risk, the boat’s captain sought assistance, prompting a swift response from the Coast Guard unit already operating in the area.

The timely intervention of BRP Tubbataha ensured the safety of everyone on board, with no injuries or casualties reported.

The PCG said the successful rescue highlights its continued vigilance and commitment to maritime safety, particularly in the waters of Southwestern Mindanao, where sea travel remains vital but often hazardous.

“This operation underscores the Philippine Coast Guard’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding lives at sea and providing immediate assistance to vessels in distress,” the CGDSWM said in a statement.

Authorities continue to remind vessel operators and passengers to observe strict maritime safety protocols and ensure seaworthiness before travel, especially amid ongoing rescue operations and unpredictable sea conditions.
